28mm The Black Dragon Tong, Holmes & Watson

Hi All,

My latest commission project takes me back down memory lane to one of my first. Back in July 2013 I painted a similar group for the Osprey game - In Her Majesty's Name. This group is based on the boxer rebellion era, with a steampunk twist. The minis were fun to paint as was Holmes & Watson & I'm really happy not just with the results but the fast turn around time (about three days). These were all painted to my silver level.

28mm Inquisitorial Characters #1 Plus Studio Update

Hi All,

Today I completed my first project since my day's tutorial with Tommie Soule. Firstly, I have to say that I had a great days tuition, learnt a lot, most of which is so fundamental to painting, hence the course name 'Fundamentals of miniature Painting'. Tommie (despite being a painting rock star) is so down to earth, easy to work with & a great teacher. I would recommend to anybody wanting to improve their skill level.

Following research, advice from Tommie & customers I have decided to change my pricing structure/increase my prices. The structure has changed into three (rather than four or more) painting levels. Each of these levels having one price for a standard sized/complexity/painted mini. I can then simply +/- a percentage for non-standard minis. The result of which I feel is a simpler/fairer approach for all concerned. I'm pleased to say that all my current customers like the improvement & are 'accepting' the prince increases.

Now onto the eye candy! This latest project is the start of a much larger group of kit bashed (mainly GW) minis. They are to be used for the customer's own game & the colour schemes are the result of collaboration between us both.  The second to last mini (below), big guy with gun on his shoulder includes some Green Stuff work. I filled in the stomach, which was spilling out & I added the cable from the gun to his body.

28mm Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters

Hi All,

Today I completed the last part of the recent Hordes group, this being the ten man Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters. Their leader was painted to my second highest level, with the troops at my basic level.

10mm, Imperial French Infantry, League of Augsburg

Hi All,

Here is a recent sample commission for a potential new customer. Consisting of 23 10mm Pendraken League of Augsburg infantry, painted as the French regiment Le Sarre. All the troopers are painted at my entry level (Tabletop 10) & the officers are a level up (Tabletop Plus 10), I also have another level which includes further highlights (not shown here).

Although the customer requested this mix of levels to see the various results, I feel that this is a great way to complete regiments. The officers come out looking very clean, brighter & more officerly* (new work, lol). The troopers (being the mass of your infantry) are completed more cost effectively & look that bit darker than their officers (not having the money to purchase good quality uniform).

The pics below show not only completed pics, but also wip shots.

28mm Forsaken - Legion of Everblight

Hi All,

As hoped I managed to complete this 'Forsaken' mini today. The colour scheme was designed to tie-in with other forces from this group. The skin is deliberately the darkest tone in the group to match the 'forsaken' character. The bone & red colours can be found elsewhere in the force. This mini reminds me a lot of the mythical Greek king Calibos, struck down Zeus.

28mm Lylyth, Shadow of Everblight. Plus Business Update!

Hi All,

For those that regularly follow my daily posts I apologise for my lack of updates. More on that after today's post.

Lylyth, Shadow of Everblight was completed today, colours agreed between the customer & myself. The robe was primarily painted with the airbrush, which is great for painting robes. The remainder was brushwork.

Next in line for this commission is 'Forsaken', which I plan to complete tomorrow & then its onto the 'Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters'.

Business Update!

Ive spent a lot of last week (whilst bed bound with man flu) thinking about ways I can improve my business. I was especially concerned about how I use my time & how much I get paid. I contacted several other Pro-Painters, as well as customers to get their take on things & was overwhelmed with all the great advice I got in return. Rather than explaining everything in detail, I'll summarise what I intent to change over the coming months:
  1. Improve my website. It needs to be simpler to use, with less detail & made better accessible to phones/tablets
  2. Daily updates are gone! These will only happen at the start & end of projects, saving at least an hour a day
  3. My prices are too low & I offer too many painting levels/options. These will be updated with the new website
  4. 1-2-1 tuition is being arranged (all being well next week) with non other than Tommie Soule (Golem Painting Studio), he will help me to be a more proficient painter.
  5. Lastly, (though not directly linked to Mickey's Minis) I plan to set-up a Facebook group for Pro Painters. This will enable like-minded professionals get together, share tips/knowledge/info.
I want to ensure that I'm doing the best by my customers & myself with the service I provide.
