LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 30h 00m

Hi All,

The Austrians got all the attention today, as I worked on the blue and red areas. As there is a lot of red across these minis I didn't start any highlighting yet, even so they are starting to look really good(IMHO).

LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 26h 30m

Hi All,

Another busy day in the studio! Ive highlighted the skin, hair and buff leather. Then starting on the 'real' colours of these minis, yellow, grey, light/mid blue and pearl grey all painted and highlighted.

This deals with smaller variety, the vast majority of the units colours being red, white and blue; which I'll start tomorrow.

LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 12h 30m

Hi all,

In contrast with the long day yesterday, I had to have a shorter day today. I which time I highlighted all the black areas with Dark Grey(VMC).

I also changed the base colour for the pics to grass green, which I feel brings some much needed colour/life to the pics(especially at these early stages).

LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 10h 30m

Hi All,

Its been a long black day! I started out painting the black horse leather, then thought I may as well paint the other black areas; It then occurred to me that their is a lot of black on these cavalry and it would be much easier/quicker to paint the whole mini(minus the horse) black with a larger brush. With careful use of the brush from this point I should also avoid having to blackline or use black anymore, a fact I'm very happy about.

A note on my pics, today I received an ordered pack of A4 sized felt(multi-coloured) to be placed under the minis when taking pics. I will mostly be using black, as it provides to best canvas for these pics. For time to time I will use different colours to enhance to pic(watch this space).

LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 4h 15m

Hi All,

Well my best laid plans for pre-shading dint work out as I hoped; the highlights not 'popping' as I hoped they would. This left me with a choice of highlighting by hand, re-airbrushing or coming up with a new plan. I chose the later, re-worked my painting guide and added new highlights to the cavalry with the airbrush.

The new guide (a universal one for LoA cavalry, in line with the infantry one) uses a black undercoat, zenithal highlights are added from 45 then 33 degrees with lighter shades on the 33 degree passes. I have seven colours for the horse flesh: white, light/dark grey, light/dark brown, chestnut & black.(see below's pics)

Today therefore, has been a frustrating one with time lost on a misjudgement and eating of humble pie. However, the end results were good.

LoA 10s #2 - Austro/Swab/Franco/Sax Cavalry - WIP 1h 45m

Hi All,

Its been a busy start to the week with most my day take-up with the preparation of the cavalry for the LoA commission.

This afternoon I made a start on the airbrushing(1h 45m shown above). Im using a slightly different approach with these cavalry, one which has worked well with the infantry previously. That is to use a pre-shade undercoat with a thin basecoat; the result of which is a horse which looks naturally highlighted(dark base - bright top). Not only does this look better, but also shaves a little brush time.

I first applied an undercoat of black to the whole mini, then grey undercoat from a 45 degree angle and finally a white undercoat from directly above.

My next step will be to apply the various horse colour shades.

Hi All,

So, I've gotten a little more done since my last update; in fact all the base coating, the initial varnishing(Gloss) and washes are now completed. From here I can start the highlighting.

Pics below are in two batches; first the minis prior to varnish/washing and then afterwords.
