BA US Airborne #1 Prep

Last night a fellow wargames club member and now new customer brought me a box full of Bolt action minis (US Airborne & Germans). This commission will take on the US Airborne army which consists of:

30 Infantry/Paratroopers
2 Bazooka teams
3 MMG teams
1 3man Command Group
1 Forward Observer
1 Medic
1 Howitzer team
1 Anti Tank team
2 Jeeps

Today I've been working on the painting guide (these will be painted to my Elite level). After some time researching the uniforms of the US Airborne during WWII, the various painting guides online and talking to my customer I came up with the following (there will be some variation for non-paratroop minis):

  • Clean and wash mouldings
  • Assemble the minis, attaching to 2p bases
  • Attach sand to bases with PVA
  • Apply an undercoat with the airbrush using a 1:1:1 mix of White:Black Surface Primer(V):Airbrush Thinner(V)
  • Airbrush the whole mini with a 1:1 mix of German Camo Beige(VMC):Airbrush Thinner(V)
  • Paint the skin with a coat of Heavy Skintone(VGC)
  • Paint the webbing, backpacks, ammo pouches & entrenching tools/canteen covers with a coat of Deck Tan(VMC)
  • Paint the helmets, dark green equipment (holster MP/BAR pouches) with a coat of US Dark Green(VMC)
  • Paint the wood (rifle, handles), chin strap & boots with a thinned coat of Heavy Sienna(VGC)
  • Paint the helmet camo cloth with a coat of Green Ochre(VMC)
  • Paint the elbow/knee patches with a coat of Reflective Green(VMC)
  • Paint knife covers with a coat of Rakarth Flesh(C)
  • Paint any gloves with a coat of Zandri Dust(C)
  • Paint the metal parts with a thinned coat of Heavy Charcoal(VGC)
  • Paint the whole base including the rim with a thinned coat of Flat Earth(VMC)
  • Clean-up the uniform with a coat of German Camo Beige(VMC)

  • Airbrush the mini with a 1:1 mix of Gloss Varnish(V):Airbrush Thinner(V)
  • Airbrush the whole mini with a 1:1 mix of Agrax Earthshade(C):Airbrush Thinner(V)

  • Highlight the skin with a coat of Flat Flesh(VMC)
